Third Thursday Social Supper
21 May 2026 at Art Riot Collective
Join us for our Third Thursday social networking event, marking the opening of MunKyle’s exhibition, Fragile Freedom: A Story of Survival, Not Choice.
This exhibition has been developed during MunKyle’s residency with Art Riot Collective. Working in collaboration with Christopher Samuel, a cohort of disabled artists, and curator Jennifer Gilbert, MunKyle has expanded his visual arts practice while engaging with curatorial processes to realise this solo exhibition.
Fragile Freedom builds on MunKyle’s previous combined arts performance and exhibition, I’m Not Supposed to Be Here, supported by Arts Council England. This earlier work confronted ableism and challenged entrenched stereotypes surrounding disability, forming a powerful foundation for the current exhibition.
At its core, I’m Not Supposed to Be Here reflects a deeply personal narrative shaped by lived experience. The work speaks to a lifelong sense of displacement and survival, addressing systemic barriers, societal expectations, and the realities faced by disabled individuals. Through this practice, MunKyle explores themes of autonomy, marginalisation, and resistance.
Across both projects, MunKyle’s work engages candidly with difficult subjects, including disability injustice, neglect, and mental health. His approach challenges conventional boundaries of performance and visual art, using the body as both material and message. In doing so, he creates space for urgent and often underrepresented conversations, establishing himself as a compelling and politically engaged multidisciplinary artist.
